Asthma

ABOUT ASTHMA

There are over five million people with asthma in the UK. That is one in every 12 adults. Although the respiratory system is essentially in good working order, the bronchi (small tubes carrying air in and out of the lungs) become inflamed and more sensitive than usual. When you come into contact with something that irritates your lungs, your airways narrow, the muscles around them tighten and there is an increase in the production of sticky mucus (phlegm).

SYMPTOMS OF ASTHMA

Wheezing (high-pitched whistling sounds when breathing out) Cough, worse particulalry at night Difficulty in breathing Chest tightness

HOW THE SALT CAVE CAN HELP

For those suffering from asthma, Salt Therapy can not only bring much-needed relief, but also prevent the frequent recurrence of your symptoms. If left untreated, the chronic inflammation caused by asthma can lead to the lungs becoming irreversibly obstructed. Prescription drugs and inhalers may bring immediate relief, but Salt Therapy has a far more lasting effect as many, many visitors have testified. Prescription drugs such as inhalers are a short-term fix, leaving the underlying problem unchanged once an attack has passed.

Salt Therapy is different because: Salt kills bacteria It widens the airways by reducing inflammation It is mucolytic, which means it helps to shift retained mucus and therefore reduce the chance of infection It reduces IgE levels, which means the immune system won’t over-react to asthma/allergy triggers

Bronchiectasis

ABOUT BRONCHIECTASIS

Bronchiectasis is an abnormal widening of one or more airways. Extra mucus is made in the abnormal airways – collecting at the “humps” – and this is prone to infection, with the main symptom being a cough which produces sputum and leads to constant tiredness.

Treatment often includes regular physiotherapy and courses of antibiotics, which in some cases may be long term. Inhalers and even surgery are other options. The severity of symptoms varies widely. Some people have only a few while others’ are wide ranging and occur daily. Some people with bronchiectasis also have chronic sinusitis, which may cause an increase in mucus from the nose. Recurring chest infections are common as excessive mucus is a perfect place for bacteria to multiply.

HOW SALT CAN HELP

  • It kills bacteria, which is a major element of bronchiectasis
  • It has mucolytic effects, meaning it helps to shift retained mucus and reduce the chance of infection
  • It is anti-inflammatory
  • It reduces IgE levels, meaning the immune system becomes less oversensitive

HOW THE SALT CLINIC CAN HELP

If you are suffering from bronchiectasis, you should consider Salt Therapy. Not only will it bring much-needed relief, but it also prevents the frequency of symptoms occurring.

Salt Therapy is a clinically proven natural, safe and beneficial method of treatment for every age group. By visiting one of our Salt Rooms and breathing in the saline aerosol generated by our machine it can significantly help to:

  • Reduce the need for antibiotics
  • Make your breathing easier after just a few sessions
  • Improve lung function
  • Reduce the number of hospital admissions
  • Alleviate sneezing, coughing, and shortness of breath
  • Clear mucus and sticky phlegm from the lungs Increase the resistance to respiratory tract diseases
  • Strengthen your immune system

Chest Infection

ABOUT CHEST INFECTION

A chest infection affects the lungs, either in the larger airways (bronchitis) or in the smaller air sacs (pneumonia). It is slightly worse than a heavy cold and is extremely common – affecting about a third of babies in their first year. The infection itself may last just five to seven days, but the symptoms can last much longer. Young children are more at risk of Pneumonia.

ABOUT PNEUMONIA

Pneumonia is an inflammation in the gas-exchanging air sacs (alveoli) in the lung caused by various bugs, including viruses and bacteria. The most common bacteria affecting children is streptococcus pneumonia. Pneumonia comes on suddenly, often following a viral infection such as a cold. Symptoms include a high fever, cough, breathlessness and sometimes pleurisy – a sharp chest pain on breathing in.

ABOUT BRONCHIOLITIS

Bronchiolitis is a common illness of the respiratory tract caused by an infection that affects the tiny airways, called the bronchioles, that lead to the lungs. As these airways become inflamed, they swell and fill with mucus, which can make breathing difficult. Bronchiolitis most often affects infants and young children because their small airways can become blocked more easily than those of older kids or adults. This typically occurs during the first 2 years of life, with peak occurrence at about 3 to 6 months of age. Although it’s often a mild illness, some infants are at risk of a more severe disease that requires hospitalization.

The early symptoms of bronchiolitis are similar to those of a common cold. The first symptom is usually a blocked or runny nose and your child may also have a slight cough or fever. Symptoms usually get worse during the first three days, then gradually improve. During this time, your child may experience:

  • A rasping and persistent dry cough
  • Rapid or noisy breathing
  • Brief pauses in their breathing
  • Feeding less and having fewer wet nappies
  • Vomiting after feeding
  • Being irritable

HOW THE SALT CLINIC CAN HELP

Our mission is to help your children, and focus on the source of the problem rather than just suppressing the symptoms , which is what medication usually does.

To get a better understanding of how salt can help with different chest infections, first of all we need to know what kind of properties salt has.

  • It kills bacteria (the salt dries out all the germs and bacteria in your respiratory system)
  • It is Anti-Inflammatory (Based on clinical studies the dry, saline-diffused air reduces inflammation in the whole respiratory tract)
  • It has Mucolytic effects (loosens excessive mucus, speeds the elimination of toxins)
  • Removes pathogen agents (airborne pollen)
  • Strengthens the immune system and restores energy levels
  • It reduces IgE levels (the immune system won’t over-react to asthma/allergy triggers)

As a result of Salt Therapy, inflammation and mast cell response within the bronchi, bronchioles and aveoli reduces, so the quality and function of breathing improves.

This leads to the balancing of other bodily systems, due to increased oxygen availability. Thanks to the desensitisation of the immune response, sleep patterns will improve and acute attacks and the need for medication will substantially decrease. This means the child will have more energy to play or exercise and become stronger and more resilient to every day infections.

COPD

ABOUT COPD

By 2030, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is predicted to be the fourth leading cause of death in the UK. It is thought there are over 3 million people living with the disease in the UK, of which only about 900,000 have been diagnosed. This is because many people who develop the symptoms dismiss it as a smoker’s cough and don’t seek help.

COPD is a general term which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, both of which can cause narrowing of the airways and commonly occur together.

KEY FACTS

  • Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchi (the airways of the lungs).
  • Emphysema is damage to the smaller airways and airsacs (alveoli) of the lungs.
  • Pulmonary means ‘affecting the lungs’.

SYMPTOMS OF COPD

A cough is usually the first symptom to develop, coming and going before gradually becoming more persistent. People often think of their cough as a ‘smokers’ cough’ in the early stages of the disease. It is when the breathlessness begins that people often become concerned.

Breathlessness and wheeziness may occur only when you exert yourself at first, for example, when climbing stairs. These symptoms tend to become gradually worse over the years if you continue to smoke, and chest infections are more common.

MAIN CAUSES

-Smoking. The primary risk factor for COPD is chronic tobacco smoking. In the United States, 80 to 90% of cases of COPD are due to smoking. Almost all life-long smokers will develop COPD, provided that smoking-related, extrapulmonary diseases (cardiovascular, diabetes, cancer) do not claim their lives first.

– Occupational exposure. Intense and prolonged exposure to workplace dust found in coal mining, gold mining and the cotton textile industry and chemicals such as cadmium, isocyanates and fumes from welding have been implicated in the development of airflow obstruction, even in non-smokers.

– Air pollution. Studies in many countries have found that people who live in large cities have a higher rate of COPD compared to people who live in rural areas.

HOW SALT CAN HELP

Salt is antibacterial, it kills bacteria It reduces inflammation of the airways Salt is mucolytic, which means it helps to shift retained mucus

HOW THE SALT CLINIC CAN HELP

During the Salt Therapy process the overwhelming majority of patients notice a decrease in cough frequency and intensity, and that it’s easier to cough up mucus, which becomes less sticky and changes in its nature.

COPD sufferers find that not only does Salt Therapy bring immediate relief in the shorter, but also delays the frequency of reoccurrence.

Salt Therapy is a clinically proven natural, safe and beneficial method of treatment for every age group. By visiting one of our Salt Rooms and breathing in the saline aerosol generated by our machine it can significantly help to:

  • Reduce the need for inhalers, steroids and antibiotics

  • Clear mucus and sticky phlegm from the lungs Increase the resistance to respiratory tract diseases
  • Strengthen your immune system
  • Prolong remission times

Colds and Coughs

ABOUT COLDS

A cold is a viral infection that affects the nose, throat and sinuses. While adults usually have two to four colds a year, children can catch as many as seven to 10. Children often cough when they have a cold because of mucus trickling down the back of the throat.

Babies and anyone whose immune system is compromised can be at risk of developing more serious complications, such as a bacterial chest infection.

ABOUT COUGHS

Coughs are incredibly common. It is one of the most common reasons for parents to visit their GP with their children. A cough is a reflex action to clear the airways of mucus and irritants, foreign particles and microbes. Coughs may be dry or chesty. Most children with a cough have an upper respiratory tract infection caused by a virus or in more severe cases a chest infection or pneumonia. If a cough continues for a long time, especially if it’s worse at night or is brought on by your child running about, it could be a sign of asthma. Some children with asthma also have a wheeze or breathlessness.

Most coughs clear up within two weeks although babies and anyone whose immune system is compromised can be at risk of developing more serious complications, such as a bacterial chest infection.

DRY OR CHEST COUGH

Dry coughs are usually felt in the back of the throat as a tickle that sets off the coughing. It happens when the throat and upper airways become inflamed (swollen). It is closely related to tickly coughs and often these terms are used interchangeably. Both dry coughs and tickly coughs are known as non-productive coughs (no phlegm), as distinct from chesty coughs where mucus is produced. A dry cough is most often the result of infection by cold and flu viruses because your brain thinks the inflammation in your throat and upper airways is a foreign object and tries to remove it by coughing. It can also be triggered by atmospheric pollutants (such as cigarette smoke) irritating your throat.

Chesty coughs (mucus coughs) are triggered by an excessive amount of mucus in the chest. The cough is helpful, because it clears the mucus from your lung passages. When the common cold or flu viruses enter the respiratory system, more mucus is produced in an attempt to wash away the bugs and help fight off the infection. This increased mucus can gather in the respiratory system and a cough reflex is triggered to help remove the extra phlegm.

WHAT CAUSES A COUGH

A cough is usually caused by a virus or bacterial infection. Most people with a cough have an upper respiratory tract infection caused by a virus or in more severe cases a chest infection or pneumonia. Possible non-infectious causes include:

  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • A flare-up of a long-term condition such as asthma or COPD
  • Smoking
  • Acid reflux

Cystic Fibrosis

ABOUT CYSTIC FIBROSIS

It is estimated that one in every 2,500 babies born in the UK will be born with cystic fibrosis and there are over 9,000 people living with the condition in this country. Difficulty breathing is the most serious symptom and results from frequent lung infections – these can be treated, though not cured, by antibiotics and other medications.

SYMPTOMS OF CYSTIC FIBROSIS

  • Troublesome cough
  • Repeated chest infections
  • Sinus infections
  • Poor growth
  • Diarrhoea
  • Infertility
  • Breathlessness

Sinusitis

ABOUT SINUSITIS

In most people, sinusitis develops after a cold or flu-like illness.

When the lining of the sinuses is at all swollen, the swelling interferes with the normal flow of mucus. Trapped mucus can then fill the sinuses, causing an uncomfortable sensation of pressure and providing an excellent environment for the growth of infection-causing bacteria.

Acute sinusitis means that the infection develops quickly (over a few days) and lasts a short time. Many cases of acute sinusitis last a week or so, but it is not unusual for it to last 2-3 weeks (that is, longer than most colds).

SYMPTOMS OF SINUSITIS

  • A blocked or runny nose. If your nose produces green or yellow mucus, you probably have a bacterial infection.
  • Pain and tenderness in the face (near the infected sinuses). You may experience a throbbing pain that is worse when you move your head, and toothache or pain in your jaw when you eat.
  • A high temperature.

OTHER POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

  • Tiredness
  • A sinus headache
  • A cough
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Pressure in your ears
  • Loss of taste and smell

HOW SALT CAN HELP

  • It kills bacteria
  • It has mucolytic effects, meaning it helps to shift retained mucus and reduce the chance of infection
  • It is anti-inflammatory
  • It reduces IgE levels, meaning the immune system becomes less oversensitive

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU COME

15-20 sessions are recommended or long term results. With irreversible conditions you may need to come for more sessions. The sessions should be frequent; about three a week is suggested. In most patients, after a course of Salt Therapy, airways become normal and symptoms disappear. The treatment’s efficacy is estimated at 75-98%. Most clients do 1-2 Salt Therapy courses a year. In between they might come back for some top-up sessions, if they start to feel poorly, e.g. they are coming down with a cold.

Eczema

ABOUT ECZEMA

Eczema and contact dermatitis account for 84-90% of occupational skin disease, and affects up to one in five children. It usually appears for the first time before your child is two years old, and more than half of children will be over it by the time they’re teenagers, but it can also continue into adulthood.

Eczema is a form of dermatitis, which is an acute or chronic inflammation of the skin.

Having eczema means that the skin’s barrier doesn’t work as well as it should, which makes it drier. Skin will be more prone to infections and allergens can enter the skin more easily, which can make the condition worse.

In mild cases of eczema, the skin is dry, scaly, red and itchy. In more severe cases there may be weeping, crusting and bleeding. Constant scratching causes the skin to split and bleed and also leaves it open to infection.

Atopic eczema is a genetic condition based on the interaction between a number of genes and environmental factors. In most cases there will be a family history of either eczema or one of the other ‘atopic’ conditions i.e asthma or hay fever.

Eczema can’t be cured, but it can be controlled with the right treatments.

HOW THE SALT CLINIC CAN HELP

If your child is suffering from eczema life can become very difficult. You have to be really careful because children often try to relieve the itching by rubbing the affected areas with a hand or anything within reach. Unfortunately scratching can make the rash worse. The skin is a mirror to the internal body and in particular, intestines. Skin irritations and eczema which appear around the neckline, on the face, especially around the mouth area, usually indicate disrupted intestinal flora. The body cannot eliminate toxins and excretes them through the skin.

Salt Therapy is a clinically proven natural, safe and beneficial method of treatment for every age group. It:

  • Kills bacteria.
  • Is anti-inflammatory.
  • Reduces IgE levels, meaning the immune system becomes less oversensitive.
  • Internally, Salt Therapy helps to lower the IgE level, a measure of antibodies which is often high in people with allergies. Salt Therapy helps to lower this level, meaning the immune system does not over-react to try to deal with the problem.

On the outside of the body, it reduces inflammation on the skin and improves circulation on the skin surface. Particles of the dry salt aerosol kill bacteria and fungi and cleanse your skin and respiratory tract of allergens like pollen, dust or smoke which trigger the disease. After a few sessions, the itching sensation on your little one’s skin decreases, cracks heal and rashes disappear.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU COME?

15-20 sessions are recommended for the best results. The sessions should be frequent; about two to three a week is suggested.

Eczema and Psoriasis

ABOUT ECZEMA AND PSORIASIS

In the UK, one in 12 adults has the dry skin condition eczema while eczema and contact dermatitis account for 84-90% of occupational skin disease. It is a highly individual condition which varies from person to person and comes in many different forms, but is not contagious. In mild cases, the skin is dry, scaly, red and itchy. In more severe cases there may be weeping, crusting and bleeding. Constant scratching causes the skin to split and bleed and leaves it open to infection.

Psoriasis is similar to eczema and affects around 2% of people in the UK. It can start at any age, but most often develops in adults under 35 years old. When a person has psoriasis, their skin replacement process speeds up, taking just a few days to replace skin cells that usually take 21-28 days. This abundance of skin cells builds up to form raised ‘plaques’ on the skin.
